Step 1

Be great at your current job. Go above and beyond your job description so that you can help people out when your workload ends. Learn everything you can about your job so that you are irreplacable in the eyes of your employer.

Step 2

Be a good role model to other employees. Show up to work on time (a few minutes early, even) and don't leave the second the minute hand hits 5:00. Don't take long lunches or short cuts at your work. Be respectful of others and keep your candy dish well-stocked. All of these things will get you a great reference from your employer.

Step 3

Update your resume. Include not just jobs you've had, but volunteer work you've participated in and career workshops you've attended. Include as many things as you can that show why you're a great candidate for the job or promotion.

Step 4

If you ever use drugs, stop. In the event that you are selected for a job or a promotion, you may need to pass a drug test. Occasional drug use is a stupid reason to miss out on a great opportunity. It just isn't worth it. If you need help, seek out a substance abuse counselor.
