It has been a while since I was suddenly unemployed, but most of the steps I'm going to share with you are not out-dated. Here are the following steps you need to take if you have to file for unemployment compensation:
1. Go to the unemployment office the same day you find out you are unemployed.
2. Go to your Human Resource Department to apply for what ever you may be eligible for.
3. Go home and find every document you can.
4. Stop all luxuries such as: cable, eating out, buying clothes, entertainment, etc.
5. If you have been giving your children lunch money, go to the school and tell the person in charge of "free lunch" that you are unemployed and you have applied for AFDC/Foodstamps. Your children should start receiving free lunch soon.
6. If you are past due on your utility bills, call and ask for an extension (you can only get an extension if you are past due or received a cut-off notice.
7. After you receive all the assistance you can get and your savings have been liquidated, you can get money three ways:
(1) Borrow from family, relatives, or friends
(2) Pawn
(3) Sell
If borrowing does not bother you, does not put a hardship on your lender, and your lender does not charge you interest, this is the best way to get the money you need. If you are too independent to borrow, like I was, pawning might be your best solution. Selling would be the last resort, depending on your situation.
8. Update your resume and make plenty of copies.
9. Get your calendar and tentatively do a budget with your new resources.
10. If able to keep your phone service, use it wisely. The Sunday's newspaper, Internet and library are your greatest assets.
11. Above all, if you believe in God, Praise Him, Thank Him, and Ask Him!
