Physical therapy or physiotherapy are the procedures which help one retain movement and flexibility in his/her limbs. Where the movements of the limbs have been affected by any accident, disease or simply aging, it is the physical therapist which comes to the aid of the patients. Physical therapy is carried out by a qualified physical therapist who has a college degree.

Physical therapy has many specialties like cardiopulmonary, neurological, orthopedic, pediatrics and geriatrics etc. The history of this therapy dates back to 1885 when it was first put into use by Henrik Ling, who is known as "Father of Swedish Gymnastics". Thereafter, various countries followed suit and had their own physiotherapy societies in a short span of time.

The minimum education required to apply for the course in physical therapy differs from country to country but generally most of them require a 4 year university level course. Thereafter the candidates are required to pass a National Physical Therapist Examination, a must for all those looking for a physical-therapy jobs. A variety of advanced courses are also available in case one wants to study in greater depth.

Because of the stress, diseases and even accidents that the modern day living gives us, there is no dearth of physical therapy jobs. It was estimated that there were close to 2 hundred thousand physical therapist jobs in 2008 and the number is swelling by the day. The average earning of a physical therapist was estimated at $73,000. The physical therapist work in different kinds of settings-they can either set up their own clinics, provide physiotherapy to the patients at their homes also, outpatient orthopedic clinics, public schools or rehabilitation centers. A physical therapy job is the kind of career which requires little or no investment. The physiotherapist can provide his services door to door albeit at a surcharge; in case he is not able to set up a clinic himself.

To search for a physical therapy job, one can search the net for the availability of such jobs in their towns or areas. One can also associate him or herself with an orthopedic clinic and be able to work with the patients on their treatment. Apart from that, they can also join philanthropic societies which provide such treatments to the old and the diseased.

Another known fact is that every physical therapist generally has an assistant with them. These assistants are required to get a certification from an accredited assistant physical therapy program to work with them as well.

A typical physical therapy job may include going through the reports of the orthopedic notes, diagnosis of the extent of damage in a particular body area of the patient, determine what exercises are needed in the program and consistently check on the progress of the patient. It is the assistant's duty to conduct the exercises on the patient, perform clerical duties for them and remove any supplementary apparatus that are being used for a particular patient.
