Dressing For Success - What Does it Mean and How Will it Affect Me?

By : Robert Joe Wallace

Dressing for success has two parts, your first impression and your lasting impression. How you dress will give both your co-workers and your bosses either a positive or a negative perception of you. Positive good, negative bad, this perception will stick in the minds of your co-workers and your bosses no matter how well you work. This might not be fair, but life is not fair, so you have to deal with it.

Impressing Past the Interview
Everyone knows that a first impression will make or break you when interviewing, so people will usually try to make a good impression. If you made a good impression, you will probably get the job.

If you got the job, the next thing is to give a lasting impression. This impression will determine how you will get along with your co-workers and your bosses. If you do it right, promotions will come easier and that translates to more money.

Dressing for success means what you wear, how you wear your clothes and of course your general appearance. These three things will set up the perceptions that will make you or break you. People by nature remember positive things but emphasize the negatives more.

Perception is 90% of Performance
Perception will be about 90% of your performance and the other 10% will be your actual performance. Most companies will try to eliminate perception but it cannot be fully eliminated. People will think what they think no matter what, so accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.

How to Make a Positive Perception

* If you have facial and body piercing other than the normal two earrings, you might think them ok. However, many people do not. You will never know who they are so it is best to be conservative and leave them off when at work. Not only will some people give you a negative perception, some which will consider them a safety hazard.
* If you have tattoos, it is best to cover them up while at work. Some people will think tattoos are offensive and thus give you a negative review or think you are not doing your job. You really do not want that. Again, you will not know who these people are and they will not say anything to you. They may not know themselves. So cover them up and do not take an unnecessary chance.
* There is a modern trend for young men to wear their pants below the hips. The style is known as sagging. Some people will not find this acceptable and will judge you poorly for it.
* Dress as best you can, but do not overdress. Overdressing will make some people jealous and will tag you as a suck up. Just as dressing too comfortable will make people judge you, dressing to well will have the same effect. Dress in the general manner of others at your job.

If you keep these things in mind, you will get better performance reviews and have fewer problems in the work force. Good luck and remember to smile, people like people who seem to be happy.
