10 Cool Jobs and What They Pay

By : Dona Dezube

What’s the coolest job ever? One that allows you to express your personality while doing something you love and getting paid for it (otherwise, it’s a hobby).

That’s the conclusion reached by David Rosen author of What’s That Job and How the Hell Do I Get It?: The Inside Scoop on More Than 50 Cool Jobs from People Who Actually Have Them.

Rosen believes “coolness” is subjective. Everyone interviewed in his book thought they had a cool job, but that doesn’t mean they wanted any of the other 49 jobs he wrote about. “The mediators were fascinated by solving disputes and helping people get along. Designing jewelry would seem trite to them,” Rosen says. “Physical therapists love that their jobs end and there’s no homework, but some of the coolest jobs are jobs you’re never really not doing.”

Still, some jobs just seem inherently cool -- the kind of jobs you dream about on days when you want to knock down your cubicle walls and run screaming from the office. With that in mind, here’s a list of 10 really cool jobs, links for finding them on Monster and, just to keep the reality meter running, a glimpse at what they pay.

1. Cowboy

If you dream of living the rural life as a cowboy, consider a position as a rancher or farm manager. You can expect to earn between $25,000 and $35,000, says Brady Lynch, an agricultural search consultant for MRINetwork Management Recruiters of Sioux Falls LLP. “A lot of times [benefits] will include other things like housing, a vehicle and even beef or chickens,” he adds. Find ranching work and farm manager jobs.

2. Actor or Singer

Most actors have second jobs, and they often end up as waitresses, teachers and administrative assistants. About 50,000 Americans work as actors, earning a median income of $11.61 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Singers and musicians do better, earning an average of $19.73, but in both fields, the work is so erratic that the BLS can’t calculate reliable annual earnings data. Find a job in music or other performing arts fields.

3. Brewmaster

It’s every college guy’s dream and a reality for about 4,000 members of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling. Study to become a brewer at The Siebel Institute or the University of California at Davis. The typical brewmaster salary ranges from $25,000 at a local brew pub to more than $100,000 at a larger national brewery, says a source at a national brewers trade association. Find brewery jobs.

4. Professional Golfer

You need nerves of steel and a love of travel to survive as a professional golfer. Average yearly winnings in the Ladies Professional Golf Association were $267,665 in 2009. With 161 ladies on the money list, top-ranked Jiyai Shin earned more than $1.8 million, while 161st-ranked Kim Welch earned just $2,171. If you want to stay in one place, work as a golf pro and earn a median salary of $57,141, according to the Salary Wizard. Find a job as a golf pro.

5. Cruise Director

Cruise directors are the multitaskers of the seas. At American Cruise Lines (ACL), the cruise director organizes and goes on shore excursions, manages guest speakers, schedules entertainment, does concierge duty and then circulates in the dining room to pitch the next day’s events, says Joe Pascarella, ACL assistant manager for operations. Hospitality recruiter Renard International in Toronto says the average salary for a cruise director is $45,000 to $50,000. If you have bank teller or retail experience, consider signing on as a casino cashier or for a job in an on-board retail shop. Find cruise-related jobs.

6. Personal Trainer

The vast majority of the 235,000 personal trainers and fitness instructors aren’t selling their DVDs at Wal-Mart; they’re working in health clubs, where they earn an average of $35,340, according to the BLS. Find personal trainer jobs.

7. Academy Awards Ballot Counter

For the past 72 years, PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Entertainment and Media practice has been counting the ballots cast for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual Academy Awards. The two partners who run the 10-day ballot-counting team get to sit backstage and pass out the envelopes with the winners’ names inside. Inside Public Accounting says the average compensation for an accounting partner was $452,744 as of mid-2009. Since your odds of becoming one of the two partners handling the task are as remote as your odds of winning an Academy Award, consider an alternative: working as an accountant in the entertainment industry. Find accounting jobs in the entertainment field.

8. Broadcast Sports Reporter

What’s not to like about a job where you watch sports, talk sports and interview athletes? The paycheck may not be as large as you’d imagine. The median salary for the approximately 9,300 US broadcast journalists is $51,570 while the 40,000 or so people working as print reporters earn a median salary of $39,120. Find reporting jobs.

9. Firefighter

There’s a lot of work out there in firefighting but the competition is fierce, so you’ll need mechanical aptitude, physical fitness, and a bit of firefighting or emergency responder education to win a paid position. The good news is that if you can land this job, opportunity will abound. The BLS projects the industry will grow 19 percent between 2008 and 2018, to 427,600 jobs. The median salary for firefighters is $44,260. Make chief, and you could about double that salary. Find firefighting jobs.

10. Flight Attendant

Free flights are the best perk offered to flight attendants. Attendants’ salaries start at around $16,191 a year, according to the Association of Flight Attendants. But salary goes up as you stay on the job, and the median salary for the 98,700 US flight attendants is $35,930, according to the BLS. Some airlines have minimum and maximum height requirements, and you can’t be too large to walk down the aisle facing forward. Speaking a second language will make you more appealing to international airlines. Find flight attendant jobs.

How Much Will a Career Change Cost You?

By : Dona Dezube

A new job in a completely different career field may fill your soul with joy, but it can also empty your wallet. Estimating the cost to shift into a new field can make the difference between a smooth fiscal transition and a personal budget crisis, so before you make a move, consider and plan for these costs:

Earning a Degree
Do you need a degree to launch your new career? Add up the cost of tuition, books and fees. If you’re quitting your current job to go back to school, include the cost of daily living expenses, plus the monthly income you won’t be earning multiplied by the number of months you’ll be in school.

Unused Vacation or Sick Time
Every time you move to a new job, you likely leave behind a little unused sick time and possibly some vacation time. Multiply your daily salary times the days you’re not using to see what that’s worth.

Trade Association Membership
Networking is critical when you switch to a new field, so include the membership fee for joining a society in the new field. If you’re headed back to school, ask if there’s a student membership rate.

A New Credential
Credentials give job seekers a boost. Include the cost of earning one -- such as testing fees, classes, required meeting attendance -- in your career-change budget.

Job-Hunting Expenses
They’re tax-deductible, but -- read the fine print -- only when you’re seeking work in your same profession. Switch to a new career, and the cost of resumes, postage, phone calls and getting to interviews is no longer deductible. Ouch!

Benefits

If your current employer provides health insurance, calculate the cost of continuing that coverage through COBRA until you’ve landed a new job with benefits. What other benefits are you giving up? Stock options? Flexible-spending accounts? Subsidized daycare? Will you lose any retirement contributions or pension eligibility? Be sure you include the value of those lost or reduced benefits in your cost calculation.

Technology

Does the new profession use software you don’t already own and that your employer might not supply? Will you need to pay for some new office equipment, such as a laptop, out of your own pocket?

Outfit Yourself
Your old job was button-down, the new field is casual. Deduct the money you’re saving by not buying suits. Going from casual to corporate? Estimate the cost of your new wardrobe and add that to your personal bottom line.

SalaryRata Penuh Are you going to earn more or less in your new career? Use Monster's Salary Wizard to see what you might earn during the course of your new career. Multiply your new projected annual salary by the number of years remaining in your career.

For Those Heading Out

If your new career will take you to a new city, then you’ve got other costs and potential savings to consider:

* Job-Hunting Trips:
Calculate the cost of airfare, hotel, car rental and meals for at least two job-hunting trips. Then, if the employer doesn’t offer to pay for your relocation, add in another two trips to look for a house; be sure to include travel costs for your family, if they’re coming on the house-hunting trips with you. The Worldwide Employee Relocation Council (ERC) says the national average cost per house-hunting trip is $1,836.

* Household Moving Costs: At least these might be tax-deductible (if the commute to the new job is at least 50 miles away from your residence and you work full-time for the next few years). If you own a home, expect moving to cost you $55,165, which includes fees involved in buying and selling a home and shipping household goods, according to ERC. If you rent, expect to pay an average of $16,177 to move, ERC says.

* Cost-of-Living Differences: The cost of living in a new city can be a huge financial factor. Figure out whether the new city is going to cost you or save you money on an annual basis, and then multiply that figure by the number of years you plan to work there.

Career Change and the Seasoned Worker

By : Susan Bryant

What would it be like to quit your job and start over in a more appealing career? If you are an older worker, you may think that a major career change would require overcoming too many obstacles to be worthwhile -- like age discrimination, new technology or a salary cut. But according to Helen Harkness, author of Don't Stop the Career Clock, the real obstacles to a midlife career change may reside in your own mind. Harkness argues that several myths surrounding midlife career changes keep people from pursuing their dream job.
Which myths do you subscribe to?

Myth 1: I'm too old to make a career change.
Reality: Without changing your perception of what you are capable of, you'll never make a successful career change. Unfortunately, while younger workers are often expected to explore different career paths, older workers are not encouraged to do so. And if you've progressed up the corporate ladder to an enviable position, friends and family may be shocked you would consider leaving success for uncharted waters. With this much pressure to stay put, it can be easy to allow your dream job to remain only a dream. As Harkness explains, some serious soul-searching is needed to understand how and why you want your career to change, so you'll have the conviction to stand up to others' disapproval.

Myth 2: If I make a career change, I'll be starting over at the bottom.
Reality: Not necessarily. You're not the newbie you were when you entered the workforce. You've gained an impressive array of skills, plus you have professional wisdom and perspective acquired only through time. The key to bypassing entry-level status is to market these assets in your next interview. The skills that made you successful may be transferable to your dream job. Believing and convincing yourself, and your interviewer, of this puts you leagues -- and salary grades -- ahead of younger competition.

Myth 3: This old dog can't learn new tricks.

Reality: Says who? Of course there will be a learning curve to any new career you try. But isn't having a new professional challenge part of why you seek this change? As Harkness says, the goal is to find a career that taps into your innate strengths and interests. As for the aspects of the job that may intimidate you (such as becoming tech savvy), accept that getting proficient in these skills may be frustrating and difficult, making mastery of these challenges more gratifying. If these myths are stopping you from pursuing a career change in midlife, expand your thinking about your capabilities instead of focusing on what you see holding you back. Also consider that accepting these myths is easier than taking a risk.

What if you are ready to take the professional plunge into a new career? Harkness says, "Go for it," with these words of caution:

* Keep Your Expectations Realistic: If you've been fantasizing that your dream job will be the antidote to your personal and professional troubles, you may be glorifying what a new career can really do. Research the economic outlook and job duties for your new career, and how it will affect your lifestyle and relationships.

* Give It Time: Deciding to venture into a new career can mean changes in your work environment, coworkers, income and how you view yourself. Even if your new position is something you've always wanted to do, all these changes can be a shock. Before calling it quits, allow enough time to let the dust settle and adjust to your new profession.

* Know Yourself: It has been Harkness' experience that most people don't know what they're good at, but midlife is a good time to figure this out. You have a history of professional and personal experience to draw from when determining your natural strengths. Think about what you truly enjoy doing, what you do well and what you are proud of. Is there an underlying theme unifying these experiences that lends itself to a job description?

Career Change Success: From IT to Marketing

By : Brooke Eaton

A career change can mean many different things, from changing jobs within one field, to taking skills from one industry and making them applicable to another.
Monster member polyloquent used IT skills to embark on a successful marketing career and has some tips to help others do the same: I've been working in IT as an e-commerce/Web BA for the past six years, and for the last year, I started to feel the pressure of being stuck in a rut. I didn’t like the idea of becoming a project manager, but agencies and employers were starting to become suspicious of why I had stayed at that level for so long.

To be honest I was a bit sick of documentation. My true passion is the Web and Internet communities, and I got to experience some of that by shaping the solutions I was documenting, but not to the extent I wanted. So I started being proactive and identifying what other strategies we could put in place to complement the solution. I ended up winning over the marketing manager, who asked me to present to the director. He was won over by my enthusiasm and ended up asking me to head the online arm of a campaign for a new product we were running. That ran smoothly, and based on that success, the director created a new role for me and poached me away from my project manager, raising my salary in the process. Now I am going to be the new online strategy manager, and I will get to work on totally amazing stuff like new campaigns and the company roadmap.

What I learned from this experience:
* Be in an organization that is agile and encourages and rewards change.
* Be passionate about what you do. If you love your job you will do it well.
* Discover a niche in your company where you can add value and don't be afraid to sell yourself.

* Don’t be scared of doing stuff that isn’t part of your job, or stepping out of your comfort zone.

Now It’s Your Turn
If you work for a company with many different departments, changing careers doesn’t have to be drastic. Polyloquent took the steps to move into a new line of work. By identifying what you do and do not like about your current situation and being proactive about discovering what would make you happy, you can rejuvenate your career by redefining it.

Tips for Making an Internal Career Change:
* Identify What You Want: If you are unhappy in your current position, identify what it is about it you don’t like.
Focus on where your passions lie, and what about the job you do like. Remember why you accepted the
position in the first place.

* Step Outside the Box: If you are passionate about work that isn’t in your job description, take the initiative to
do work that is interesting to you (in addition to your assigned work) -- even if it’s beyond your regular
responsibilities.

* Reach Out to Others: Try to establish relationships with people in other departments and convey your interest
in what they do to them.

* Leverage Your Skills: Use your knowledge and skill sets from your previous or current jobs to show others how your contributions are indispensable. Polyloquent was able to use a background in the Web to offer some innovative and insightful marketing strategies. The current job allows polyloquent to tap into both passions: the Web and marketing.

Jump-Start Your Career Change

By : Ian Christie

The prospect of changing careers is both exhilarating and daunting. If you know exactly what you want to pursue, don't become stymied by the enormous challenges the career-change process presents. Employ these powerful strategies to make that career change a reality.

Determine Your Leverage PointInventory the skills and experiences you can leverage in your career switch. Examples include:
  • Company Type: Leverage your knowledge about the kinds of companies you've worked for. Nonprofit organizations have certain similarities. So do family-owned or owner-operated businesses and, to a certain degree, public companies.
  • Transferable Skills: In most cases, skills you've honed in one career will be relevant in the next. Project management, team leadership, sales, customer service, analytical capabilities, problem solving, hiring, training and numerous other abilities are all common transferable skill

  • Experience: Use any startup, shutdown, merger, product launch or corporate crisis you've lived through as leverage when you talk to companies dealing with similar issues.
  • Job Environment: If you've ever worked in a pressure-cooker environment, you'll be no stranger to a similar environment in another industry. The same will be true if you've ever dealt with unions, worked for an entrepreneur or worked without supervision.
  • Networks: Leverage your current relationships to find entry points into your new field. All it takes is a different type of conversation to get started. Ask contacts what they know and whom they know related to the field you want to enter. Follow up on their leads, and you'll make progress quickly.

State Your Case Effectively

Be sure you have strong, valid reasons to change careers. If you know why you want to make the change and what you stand to gain from it, you'll increase your odds of success considerably. Also, be sure you can articulate those reasons to potential employers and explain what's in it for them. Employers don't want to feel like you're running away from something.
Find the Logical Entry Point

Often, a certain role or company will serve as a natural transition into your new field. Bolster your chances of getting hired by using your leverage points to identify where you best fit.
Avoid Overanalysis

Developing a strong understanding of yourself is imperative to managing your career change, but avoid analysis paralysis. You cannot think your way to a career change; eventually, you must act.
Connect with People in Your Target Field

When you're changing careers, your resume is less useful as a marketing tool. For that reason, building your network becomes even more critical. Connect with people in your target field to validate your interest and learn about opportunities.
Make an Impression

On interviews, be the standout candidate by talking up the actions you've taken that prove your commitment to the field. Reveal your industry knowledge, and mention industry events you've attended or industry associations where you volunteer. If you write an industry-related blog, reference that as well. You could even present a white paper on an industry issue you've researched or a business plan that demonstrates the value you could bring to the organization

Your goal is to make potential employers see you as someone already in their industry and in it to stay, regardless of whether they hire you. Don't leave the impression that if they don't hire you, you will do something else.

Moonlight

One tangible way to start your career change is through freelance or part-time work. Such work builds your resume and lets you test the waters in your new fieldConcrete steps such as these create momentum for your career change, demonstrate your commitment to potential employers and validate your plan.

Broaden Your Marketing Perspective

By : Floweradvisor.com

The most motivated people are those who do their work willingly without hesitation and are happy to do their jobs. Disgruntled employees who do their jobs merely to earn a living without the drive can drag the productivity of the whole group down leading to a failure. As the leader, a failure by one member of the group is a failure by all and it should be understood as such. Camaraderie is the key to harmony and healthy co-worker office relationships and a motivated team is the most productive team. Happiness lies when the group and the individuals that make up the group are at peace with co-workers and their superiors.

This is a hard thing to do for the structure of the business organization defines the boss as the leader of the pack and his employees as the workers. The drive to be productive places pressure on the group which results in dissatisfaction in between the members. A good leader always knows when his people need a break and when to asses that his efforts to motivate them are effective and getting results. One on one evaluations or meetings can be used to analyze the individual then turning to the whole group for his final analysis and adjustments to the approach towards the group and the individuals that make up the group is done as necessary.

Nice if your team has been under a lot of stress but beware of the occasional bummer should you decide to engage in activities that would be involving alcohol for it will take away any inhibitions and even respect in some cases. Be professional and treat your guys like friends and stop barking orders when out of the office except when on official business. It builds the confidence of people when you treat them as equals even for a few hours making them respect you more. Everybody needs a break from time to time and make that apparent to your people, know when to stop pushing or you might just push too much sending them over the edge and turn your motivated team into a disgruntled one. Remember that respect is earned and cannot be bought or asked for.

Take notes of fleeting ideas and encourage your staff to do the same, it allows you and your staff to all look back during your meetings to find ideas and points that would have otherwise been lost. It would be nice to get together once in a while to discuss things in the office to allow a free flow of ideas and opinion. Don't forget to express your side in the process (you're the boss, remember!) the best you could and if you can't do it alone, you might have to do some reading on how to convey your ideas. There are good people and there are brilliant people who with a few words can rally others quite easily to support your clause. Complacency is the killer of success and assuming you are the best would be the sure sign that somewhere out there is somebody better than you!

Never get complacent with the performance of your team and make them understand that if you do not maintain your edge, somebody is gonna' come along and beat you at your game. Making the right choices is not always easy and part of managing is conditioning your team to take defeat as a drive or motivation for improving performance. Invest in training and re-training for technology which usually drives the world is not always that transparent and re-education keeps people up to date and competitive. Capitalize on the strengths of the individuals who work for you and utilize those skills to establish them their role in the group.

Malpractice In Medicine Costs Careers

By : Jon Caldwell

Every now and then, critical illnesses have become entirely alarming these days and most come from various origins. And mind you, these illnesses are not simple issues that you can ignore. They are life threatening and normally people would be jolted by their origins and obvious impact towards healthy living.

There are events to support them. Some people have died because of them and these illnesses do not choose their prey. Young and old have not been spared by them and apparently this is why medical bulletins are being set out to inform people to take the necessary precautions. Don't ignore them. They are a reality.

If you think about health services as a whole, it is more than just making money. It is saving a life and making sure you can remedy their pain and suffering. We can see this everyday as people are frequently going to medical units to seek attention.

We can see the rapid development of medical technology and apparently this also means the discovery of new illnesses and diseases. The good thing about it all is that we are defining and discovering new diseases and also finding new ways to cure them. But the thing there is medical professionals are able to aid and help people who often have something wrong with them these days.

If you think technology is the only thing that is expanding these days, guess again. Medical breakthroughs are likewise providing new and faster ways of treating various illnesses and diseases and this stems from the fact that the growing list of illnesses have been plaguing various parts of the world.

Normally, it would baffle medical practitioners and normally it would take time for them to understand. Today, with the help of advanced studies and equipment, checking out the level of complications of most illnesses has become entirely better. It allows them to dissect and make the problem easier to evaluate and of course treat.

Doctors and physicians are human too. But that is no excuse for not being courteous or employing a cocky attitude as far as patients are concerned. Not all doctors would be understanding and crankiness may be experience at some time when you visit their office.

For most, this is something that can be understood. But as far as medication and diagnoses are concerned, false evaluations are unforgivable. They are the supposed masters of medicine and should they make the situation worst, they are in for a lot of trouble. This trouble is not only with the patient but with the law as well as malpractice will not be tolerated anywhere.

Medical practices are still the top need and demand in the world today and apparently this is why more people are inclined to take up this field. Medical and nursing degrees are the apparent hot career jobs to consider and this was made so because of the growing demand all over the world.

We can see the standards for this job growing by the day and apparently it seems that the demand is still high at this point. With most countries from the US and Europe recruiting like crazy, it should not be surprising why a lot of nurses and doctors have declared themselves eligible.

8 Worst Mistakes In Changing Careers

Career change really not as easy as turning the palm of the hand. Half of them had decided to compose a career in which they live, apparently failed to find a place to develop a new career alias became unemployed.

Therefore not in a hurry to decide to change your career. Even if the choice to change careers is to be done, then cermatlah create new strategies would you use to get a place to develop a new career.

Quite apart from how you design your strategy to develop a new career, Barbara Reinhold, director of the Career and Executive Development at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusset, suggest that you be careful. At least, suggestions, Barbara, do not you make eight errors which he called the worst that makes those who initially intend to change careers altogether even lose his career.

1. Do not look for work in another field without your intensive introspection before. No action is more stupid than jump to another job without first menimbangkanya thoroughly. Make sure that you are not going to move to new jobs without you knowing that the job might make you poorer than before.

2. Do you ever find a damp, without you knowing that they also see you as a suitable candidate. Nor should you get stuck on the assumption that your new work place will fit, just by looking at the possibility at a glance. People will always test you to do a job equal to what they want before actually hiring you. So, it could still be ripe to consider options for change karirr to a new place that looks nice. Make sure you decide on something because you knew the consequences and it wanted to.

3. Do not enter a new job just because you see your brother or friend was able to get through it. Find out as much information about the new jobs, network, chances are you developing a career there, before you actually enter it. If necessary, you can just go to those who never worked there, to find out more about what and how exactly the new job would you enter it.

4. Do not rush to decide a possibility, although you know enough information about it before. Try to weigh more, if possible you can imagine it's really going to run as you might imagine. If necessary, try to make self-assessment on a variety of experience and success in a new place to develop that interest you.

5. Never use money as one factor you for taking the decision to change your career. In this world, no one would ever have enough, despite the money rolling in money and therefore should not be the most decisive factor. Satisfaction and comfort of work and mental stress that may befall you, is far more important that you use as a decisive factor to change careers and enter the place to develop a new career.

6. Do not ever put your personal satisfaction as the only thing that made you decide to change careers. Try occasionally turning to another side, for example, consider the family or friends. Ask them to give an opinion about your plans. By then, maybe you'll even get a very full consideration and 90 per cent chance could make you successful in the new place.

7. Do not ever decided to return to school to develop themselves, before you do test your skills in the new workplace. Do you ever feel old to take a draw from experience sebagaui volunteers to work-even-in the new workplace.

8. Do not ever think that everything could change overnight. At the very least, you'll need at least six months to consider thoroughly before you actually decide to change your career.

You Must Have A Plan - Develop Your Career Strategy

Most people begin their careers with certain expectations in mind. You may see yourself in a corner office some day or on the front lines of the sales force. You may feel that you are cut out for a leadership position or one that offers innovation and advancement to the creative side of the company. You may want to hold an executive staff position or be in charge of a large profit area. Whatever your dreams and expectations, they are more likely to come to fruition if you have a plan of action.

Simply wanting to advance your career is not enough. Get specific about your goals. First, begin by setting out the basics. What is your ultimate goal? Do you want to be a local or regional manager? Do you want to be a partner or the CEO? Be specific and do not be afraid to aim high. Now work backwards from there. What kind of experience and skills would a CEO or manager need? Write out the positions you think would be required before someone was advanced to the position you are seeking. You might need to be in charge of various departments before taking the reigns of the entire organization.

Next, look at your time schedule. By what date do you want to achieve this ultimate goal. Be specific and realistic. If you are working in the mailroom, becoming CEO in three years is probably not going to happen. Write out a timeline of the steps you need to take to get to your goal. In a year, what position or experience do you need to have? What about in two years?

Once you have this basic information down, look at your skill set. What is missing? It is vital that you take advantage of any training or development that your company offers. Do this between each review period. If you are reviewed every three months, then schedule some sort of training for yourself four times a year so that your boss will see you making continuous progress toward the next level.

Finally, take stock of where you are now. How long have you been at the company? In that time, what have you accomplished? Do you need to step up your progress? If you have been there for two years in the same position with no further training other than the basic skills you acquired when you were hired, it is time to be proactive about your career path. Take some initiative and get involved in projects that give you the experience you need. Tell the higher ups that you are interested in a move to the next level and ask them what you need to do to get there.

Overall, the more specific and detailed your plan, the easier it will be to enact and the more successful you will be in reaching your goals.

Don't Be Afraid To Change Track Throughout Your Career

Not too long ago, the expectation of a working man or woman was to stay on the same career track for thirty, forty, even fifty years. You were expected to get a job with a great company and slowly advance through the ranks until you reached retirement age. It was vital that you found your niche while you were in school so that you could get off and running with a career and stick with it. If you went to medical school, you were expected to be a doctor until you retired. It was very rare for someone to change tracks, and it was difficult as well.

Today, the overall landscape of the working world has changed. The average tenure at a company is three years. That is far different from the old days where people spent decades working in the same office. Now you are expected to keep up with the fast paced changes of technology, communications, and marketing. If you try to stay in one place for too long, you may find that your skills are less marketable.

So the key to job security in many cases may be job variety. Having a diversified resume may be just as important as having a diversified financial portfolio. You need to have skills that are transferable so that as industries change, you can change with them. So expect to move from one position to another throughout your career.

If you start in one department as a worker, you may advance after a while to a managerial position. But a good move to get to that executive chair might include a lateral move to another department. This may seem like a change in your career track, but keep an open mind and try to envision what the experience could do for your potential advancement.

Another trend among today's workforce is changing fields altogether. Whereas it used to be unheard of to switch fields after the age of thirty, many people find today that they only realize later in life what it is they truly love to do. You may find yourself in a position where you need to go back to school and get another degree in order to pursue your dream. Again, this trend of older workers going back to college is growing.

So do not be afraid to change tracks in your career. Stay open minded and remember that only you know what will truly fulfill you.

Be Open Minded About Your Career Hopes And Direction

Most people enter college with a general idea about what they want to do for a career when they graduate. Perhaps they are interested in medicine or law. Perhaps they want to teach but do not know yet what age or subject. Perhaps they are sure that a business degree will set them on the right path but do not know where the path will lead. For others, entering college is like walking up to a buffet. There are too many choices and too little time. The truth is many people who start school with one idea about what they want to do in their career leave school with a completely different idea.

This is the advantage of college. You are expected to experiment a bit, to find your subject, and run with it once you have found it. But it is important to remember that once you start down your career path, that same open mindedness and willingness to learn are just as vital as they were in college. While you may have found a great place to start, you never know where you might end up.

One of the best ways to advance in your field is to set goals. You want to be specific and realistic about what you want to achieve and how to get there. Create a timeline that lays out how long you want to spend on certain training or how many years of experience you feel you need to move to the next level. But along with this basic plan, you need to have an open mind.

Opportunities come along all the time that are not in our plans. People come into our lives and make major changes in how we do things or how we see ourselves. Without being open to these changes, you might miss an opportunity to grow and to move in a direction that is better for you than the only one you could see previously.

So set your goals, but be willing to listen when someone offers you the chance to stray from the path you set for yourself. To do this, you will need to re-evaluate your goals and your plans to reach your goals on a regular basis. You can either do this each time you receive a review at work or you can set a time less frequently, say once a year, to look over your plans and goals and see what still fits.

You may find that what you wanted two years ago no longer fits with your aspirations and hopes for yourself now. You may have family sooner or later than you anticipate. You may discover a hidden talent that you want to cultivate. You may get a promotion sooner than you thought you would and need to advance your timeline. Re-evaluating your goals will help you to clarify what you want for yourself and how to get it. But if you cannot keep an open mind in the process, you will find it hard to adapt to an every changing world.
